Country Home Rescue with Shaynna Blaze

Shaynna, together with her children Carly and Jess, embark on the restoration of a dilapidated historical home in regional Victoria. They navigate a never-ending maze of problems when their grand plans are sideswiped by building restrictions, frustrating delays, and three COVID lockdowns! It will take every ounce of passion and persistence to turn this renovation nightmare into the forever home of their dreams, but it will be worth it as room by room is revealed.

BACK YARD & CARRIAGE HOUSE EXTERIOR

Our backyard may be small by some rural home standards but she is mighty, designed to meet all of our entertaining and lifestyle needs. This action-packed space includes a patio, veggie patch, bee hive, a grassed area, a firepit and seating, an outdoor dining and BBQ area, and a small transition space to the carriage house. In terms of design, the backyard provides the ‘breathing space’ between the old house and the new carriage house, the traditional and the contemporary. Formerly a ramshackle garage, the carriage house is a fully self-contained apartment which gives us the flexibility of extra accommodation when we have guests to stay, provides a well-appointed base for our outdoor entertaining shenanigans and, because it houses the garage, provides an extra layer of privacy when we’re arriving or leaving Sutherland House. I kept the front elevation purposely simple to hero the incredible retractable garage door and the huge window to the bedroom above. The laneway provides private access to the carriage house so if we want to, we can rent it out independently of our home.
